National Declutter Day 2015

National Declutter Day takes place for the fourth consecutive year on Saturday 26th September 2015. This annual event encourages the people of Ireland to declutter to benefit themselves, their favourite charities and our environment, and this is a perfect time of year to take stock and clear out.

Founder of National Declutter Day, Breda Stack, The Declutter Therapist, is on a mission to get everyone in Ireland involved in this unique and positive event. A nature lover with a passion for good causes, Breda created National Declutter Day in 2011 to tie together the different aspects of her work and highlight the win-win nature of decluttering. Championing ‘Declutter to feel good’, Breda creates awareness around the therapeutic nature of decluttering and the positive impact the process can have on people personally and on their homes, families, social lives, wellbeing, finances and careers.

Donating to charity is a feel-good exercise and a great way to extend the life of your unloved items. The official charity partners for National Declutter Day 2015 are Focus Ireland, Gorta-Self Help Africa, Enable Ireland, Oxfam Ireland and Irish Cancer Society. Your donations will go a long way to support the work of these worthy causes. Check with your charity in advance to see what’s being accepted and drop items directly to your local charity shop after decluttering.

National Declutter Day also promotes reusing and recycling as activities that help our beautiful environment, our communities and local businesses. Southern Region Waste Management Office (SRMWO), FreeTrade Ireland and SMILE Resource Exchange are supporting National Declutter Day 2015. Catering for different requirements, there are many convenient and ecologically-friendly ways to part with your unwanted goods.

Because decluttering is so synonymous with springtime, it’s often not a task we prioritise throughout the rest of the year. Breda made the decision to run National Declutter Day in late September so people could develop solid decluttering habits that benefit themselves and their families all year around. She says “Many individuals and families have settled back into a routine after the summer months and are ready to sort through seasonal items like clothing or hobby items and part with what they’ve outgrown. National Declutter Day 2015 is a timely opportunity to take stock and move on any unloved items for the good of everyone!”.
